Results of surgical treatment of hallux valgus
Halllux valgus is a common problem in orthopaedy. Surgical correction is
primarily indicated in order to relieve pain. Patients treated at the Department
of Orthopaedy of the Clinical Hospital Split from 1951 till 1990 were analysed.
Seventy patients were controlled in 1991. The results of treatment in 35
patients (55 feet) operated by the Keller-Brandes technique were compared
with the results of 35 patients (57 feet) operated by the Lelievre technique.
In patients operated by the Keller-Brandes method the result was estabilished
as excellent in 6 feet (11,0%), satisfactory in 19 (34,5%) and poor in
30 feet (54,5%). In patients operated by the Lelievre method the result
was estabilished as excellent in 30 feet (35,1%), satisfactory in 24 (42,1%)
and poor in 13 feet (22,8%). The results show a significant advantage of
the Lelievre method. The authors recommend the choice of this technique
mainly in the case of elderly people. Key words: hallux valgus, results
